Remember, Remember the fifth of
November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot!
When I was in primary school,
every Nov 5, with my brothers and friends I would make a guy – a sort of man
out of old clothes and newspapers – and take him around the streets asking “A
penny for the guy.” With the coins we were given we would buy some fireworks
and in the evening take the guy to the park, where there would be a big
bonfire, and burn him.
Then we would set off our
fireworks, eat treacle toffee and parkin, and watch the bonfire burn down.
All this in memory of Guy Fawkes
who in 1605 plotted against the king (treason) and planned to use gunpowder to
blow up the Houses of Parliament.
I loved Bonfire Night and looked
forward to it every year with great excitement!
