Dear Parents of Grade 1,

We are currently learning about money and the differences between EURO and other countries money. It would be great if your child could bring in some different currencies apart from EUROs. A zip lock bag or small purse is advisable so that the children will bring it back home.

Thank you for your help!

We All Scream for ICE CREAM!

 Ice Cream Experiment

What we want to find out: How will the liquid milk turn into a solid?

First we planned out each step of the experiment before we started.
1. Observe the materials.
2. Ask a Question to solve.
3. Make a Hypothesis...I think.....
4. Plan the Experiment.

Then it was time to conduct the experiment.  After adding all the ingredients to their plastic bags and the ice they had to shake, shake, shake the bag for 15 minutes.

After shaking the bag for 15 minutes, the liquid milk magically turned into a solid!  Then it was time to taste our science experiment!
The children learned that the salt that was added to the ice made the ice melt at a much lower temperature and much faster than without salt.
The salt helped the ice melt faster and at a cooler temperature. This allowed the liquid milk to turn into a solid much faster since the temperature was so cold.

We connected this ice cream experiment to what we do in winter time with the icy roads.  When the roads are icy we put salt on the ice to make it melt faster.

We Love Being Scientists!

 Ivory Soap Experiment

What we want to find out:  What will happen to a bar of soap when placed inside of a microwave?

First we planned out our experiment together on the board and then we began the experiment!

The children were very eagar to see what happened to the soap.  Our class hypothesis was that the solid soap would melt into a liquid.

Oh boy was our hypothesis wrong!  The soap expanded into a large foam bubble!

After we finished our experiment with the soap in the microwave we learned that the water and air trapped inside of the bar of soap when heated had to go somewhere.  The only place for the soap to go was out!  That explains why the bar of soap expanded and grew into a large foam sculpture.  But what should we do now with this big foam soap?

We decided as a class that we would make new soap using the foam sculptures!  But first we needed to crush up the big ball of foam and add a bit of water to the soap to make it a liquid texture.

After the soap was made into a liquid, the students added some food coloring to make their soap a fun color.  They then used different cookie cutters to form their soap into a mold.

We had such a fun time making new soaps!  The children are very eagar to take their soap home next week and try it out !
