We Love Being Scientists!

 Ivory Soap Experiment

What we want to find out:  What will happen to a bar of soap when placed inside of a microwave?

First we planned out our experiment together on the board and then we began the experiment!

The children were very eagar to see what happened to the soap.  Our class hypothesis was that the solid soap would melt into a liquid.

Oh boy was our hypothesis wrong!  The soap expanded into a large foam bubble!

After we finished our experiment with the soap in the microwave we learned that the water and air trapped inside of the bar of soap when heated had to go somewhere.  The only place for the soap to go was out!  That explains why the bar of soap expanded and grew into a large foam sculpture.  But what should we do now with this big foam soap?

We decided as a class that we would make new soap using the foam sculptures!  But first we needed to crush up the big ball of foam and add a bit of water to the soap to make it a liquid texture.

After the soap was made into a liquid, the students added some food coloring to make their soap a fun color.  They then used different cookie cutters to form their soap into a mold.

We had such a fun time making new soaps!  The children are very eagar to take their soap home next week and try it out !
